Experience and involvement in APNIC activities

Over the past three years, I have been actively engaged in APNIC’s Policy Development Process, both as a proposal author and as a contributing community member. This experience has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the policy-making framework and its practical implications. I was awarded a sponsorship through the APNIC Foundation to attend IETF 119 in Brisbane as an Australian ambassador, where I contributed to fostering input, feedback, and support from the Australian community into global internet standards development. In addition, I have also been selected to participate as a Fellow in APNIC’s Policy Fellowship Pilot Program.

Since APNIC 56, I have attended every conference in a personal capacity, consistently advocating for and supporting policy development initiatives that strengthen the RIR system and the broader internet community.

Nominee statement

It is an honor to be nominated for the role of Policy SIG Co-Chair within the APNIC community.

I have worked in the IT industry for over a decade, with experience ranging from small-scale home networks to carrier-grade data centre systems that provide internet access and critical services to end users. I currently serve as IT Manager for a national company and as a board member of Internet Australia, the Australian chapter of the Internet Society.

I believe my technical expertise, combined with my understanding of policy development and community engagement, equips me to serve effectively as Policy SIG Co-Chair. These skills will enable me to remain objective and impartial, supporting the community in adhering to the Policy Development Process.

As Co-Chair, my goal is to foster and promote inclusive policy development by encouraging and empowering members of the community to participate in shaping policies that directly impact their resource usage and membership. I am committed to ensuring that all voices are heard fairly and that the Policy Development Process is upheld with integrity.

Reason for nomination

Christopher Hawker, has been a dynamic participant in APNIC’s Policy SIG since becoming actively involved in mid‑2023. Initially engaging through mailing list discussions around APNIC’s by‑law reforms ahead of APNIC56, he quickly immersed himself in the Policy Development Process (PDP) — raising his awareness of how policy debates shape Internet number resource governance. Motivated by real‑world operational challenges and communication gaps, he authored prop‑156: Assignment of Temporary IP Resources, which addressed an evident need in the policy environment and eventually presented it during the Open Policy Meeting at APNIC57.

Beyond authoring prop‑156, Hawker has leveraged his technical and governance experience including roles such as APNIC Foundation Internet Standards Ambassador at IETF119 and as a board member of Internet Australia to help make policy development more transparent, accessible, and grounded in practical realities.

His efforts have amplified the involvement of operators and community members—especially smaller networks and community run initiatives in the PDP and fostered clearer understanding of policy language and intentions. By contributing thoughtful ideas, communicating complex policy constructs in approachable terms, and engaging collaboratively at Open Policy Meetings, Hawker has helped strengthen the inclusiveness and effectiveness of APNIC’s policy-making process. It is with this said, that I nominate Mr Hawker for Policy SIG Co-Chair.
