ISP/IXP networking workshop

Pacific Islands Telecommunications Association (PITA)   Cisco Systems International Telecommunication Union

For the first time, the Internet Service Provider/ Internet Exchange Point Networking workshop will be held in the Pacific. This is a result of the collaborative efforts of APNIC, the Pacific Islands Telecommunications Association (PITA) and Cisco Systems. The workshop is sponsored by International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The workshop offers a high level of technical expertise that would not otherwise be readily available in the Pacific.

The workshop will commence towards the end of the APT-PITA ICT Regional meeting and overlap with the opening of APNIC 18 Open Policy Meeting. Workshop participants are invited and encouraged to attend APNIC 18, which runs from 31 August to 3 September at Sheraton Fiji Resort.

Details of the workshop and how to participate are outlined below:

Course information

The ISP/IXP networking workshop is designed to provide an empowering learning environment. It will provide a combination of lecture, whitepapers, books, and hands-on laboratory exercises all focused on teaching participants how to design, scale, and maintain a production Internet Service Provider backbone.

Target audience

This is a technical workshop. Technical staff who are now or will soon be building or operating a wide area TCP/IP base Internet Service Provider (ISP) network or Internet eXchange Point (IXP), likely with international and/or multi-provider connectivity. Key ISP technical staff from the existing ISP/telco organisations in the Pacific islands (most of whom are members of APNIC and PITA) are being targeted first to benefit from this training being held in the Pacific.

Attendees are to bring their own laptops, or should give prior notice if they do not have a laptop.

Prerequisites

Cisco IOS Fundamentals; user level UNIX and maybe some system administration; some use of network design, preferably TCP/IP-based. Ideally all attendees will have completed the Cisco ICRC or equivalent course or have basic level knowledge of routing.

Course outline

  • Techniques for design, set-up, and operation of a metropolitan, regional, or national ISP backbone network. This includes advanced OSPF, BGP4, and policy-based routing configurations.

  • IOS Essentials every ISP should be doing. The hidden secrets that all key NSPs have been using for years, but not telling anyone (ie. competitive advantage).

  • Techniques for multiple connections to the Internet (multihoming), including connections to IXPs, NSP, and transoceanic Internet links.

  • Techniques for the design, set-up, and operation of metropolitan, regional, or national IXPs.

  • Techniques to achieve optimal performance and configuration from a Cisco backbone router. This includes routing scalability, network design, and configuration tips.

  • Examples from a case study of successful ISPs who are making use of many of the workshop techniques.
