APNIC Open Policy Meeting - TutorialIPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6)This tutorial describes what is IPv6, what are its advantages against IPv4, how to use IPv6, how to transit to IPv6, and what's going on now in this area. First, three problems of IPv4 are pointed out. We explain how IPv6 can solve them. Many people misunderstand that IPv6 provides huge address space only. But we emphasize that IPv6 is a paradigm change for Internet applications. Next, the syntax and semantics of IPv6 is described. You can understand that the aggregatable global address has a scheme to reduce the number of routing information to about 8,200. One of the advantages of IPv6 is address auto-configuration. Thanks to this mechanism, site renumbering will be much easier. This means you can change ISP time to time in the days of IPv6. We describe this mechanism in detail. IPv6 is invisible to users. When you use applications, you specify a domain name. It is automatically converted to IPv4 addresses or IPv6 addresses or both. This mechanism is based on DNS(Domain Name System). We explain how DNS treats IPv6. Next, three technologies for migration, dual-stack, tunnel, translator are explained. If time allows, a translator based on TCP relay is described.
