APNIC participated in the APEC TEL 48th meeting as a Guest of the APEC Telecommunication Working Group (APEC TEL) in Hawaii, USA from 16 to 21 September 2013. APNIC has been an APEC TEL official Guest since 2009.

APNIC provided a regular IPv6 deployment status update, "IPv6 Deployment: Where are we now?" at the Infrastructure Development Steering Group meeting. APNIC's Senior IPv6 Program Specialist Miwa Fujii explained the data in terms of observing a dispersed level of IPv6 deployment among different economies and network operators. Some APEC member economies with network operators that made the conscious decision to adopt IPv6 have already reached IPv6 readiness of around 5%, while other economies still have significant space to increase IPv6 adoption. She emphasized the importance of IPv6 adoption by all Internet stakeholders in order to foster the end-to-end Internet principle that provides a foundation for innovation.

APEC TEL 48 provided various useful workshops including "Comparing Approaches to Combating Botnets" and "APEC-OECD Symposium on Security Risk Management in the Internet Economy". Participants from the public and private sectors engaged in open discussion about the challenges and opportunities related to international collaboration in combating Botnets. The APEC-OECD Symposium had four major sessions including strategies and policies to manage security risk, fostering cooperation among stakeholders, practical approaches to International cooperation, and awareness education and skills. An OECD representative mentioned that the 2002 OECD Security Guidelines is being reviewed through ongoing multistakeholder consultation and encouraged APEC member economies to actively participate in the review process.

AEPC TEL Chair Ms Nur Sulyna Abdullah (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) concluded APEC TEL 48 by mentioning that the APEC TEL forum needs to be lightweight and nimble to achieve goals in the rapidly changing environment. APNIC will continue to contribute to APEC TEL by providing useful and practical technical information.  Read APNIC’s message to APEC TEL 48 delegates.
