APNIC proudly attended the inauguration of the Viet Nam Internet Association (VIA) in Hanoi on 9 October 2010. Established by five ISPs ((Posts and Telecommunications Corporation of Viet Nam (VNPT), Viettel, EVN Telecom, JSC Telecommunications Sigon (SPT) and Netnam), VIA is Chaired by Mr. Vu Hoang Lien, Managing Director of the Viet Nam Datacommunication Company (VDC) and lead by five vice presidents.
VIA is organized within the policy framework of the Viet Nam Government. It is self-governing and self-financed and it operates on a consensus model, with majority support and voluntary participation by its members.
With increasing Internet growth in developing economies such as Viet Nam, VIA believes that it can facilitate Viet Nam’s Internet expansion to the next level. With collaborative support among Internet leaders, they hope to enable more diversified social services to be delivered via the Internet.
Miwa Fujii, APNIC’s Senior IPv6 Program Specialist, delivered APNIC’s message of congratulations and encouraged the continued multi-stakeholder approach to IPv6 adoption. APNIC welcomes VIA’s initiative in taking the lead and implementing this approach, and is confident that it will speed up the transition to IPv6 and increase DNSSEC implementation.
Ms Fujii emphasized that APNIC is looking forward to working closely with Internet bodies such as the Viet Nam Internet Information Centre (VNNIC) and VIA to ensure the continued growth of the Internet in Viet Nam. APNIC also welcomes the opportunity to work with and support local community organizations, to tailor its activities to their specific local needs.
