Ministers from 21 economies within the Asia Pacific region, gathered at the Eighth APEC Ministerial Meeting on Telecommunications and Information Industry (TELMIN8) in Okinawa, Japan, have increased levels of certainty and support for industry to move forward with IPv6.
Paul Wilson, APNIC Director General, presented at this meeting, thanked the Ministers of the Asia Pacific region. "Let industry and governments collaborate together to push the accelerator button of IPv6 deployment," Mr Wilson said.
A statement on IPv6 deployment at the TELMIN8 declaration says, "We recognize that the free pool of IPv4 addresses is expected to be exhausted around 2012, and the transition to IPv6 will facilitate the achievement of universal broadband access in the APEC region. We support the IPv6 Guidelines developed by TEL."
APNIC is pleased to contribute to the inclusion of IPv6 in the Ministerial Statement, and to the development of this guideline, as an official guest of the APEC TEL. Previously, APNIC has supported APEC TEL with a series of IPv6 deployment workshops and is gratified for the recognition from this important regional body.
The 21 economies present at TELMIN are experiencing the fastest Internet growth rates in the world. Recognizing the significant challenge of IPv6 deployment and encouraging governments to develop a measured and effective response to this challenge is essential for the sustainable growth of the Internet. APNIC looks forward to further collaboration with the APEC TEL in the future.
