  • I, Sanjeev Banzal, have filed nomination for the post of the Chair SIG Cooperation. Presently, I am heading Education & Research Network India(ERNET India) as its Director General. ERNET India is a primary member of APNIC under" Large" category.
  • I have over 31 years of experience including at the senior& top positions.
  • I have Worked with the Govt of India and Telecom Regulatory of India(TRAI) therefore having adequate experience at the policy formulation and understanding level. I have experience in handling Government departments, Public Sector and the private sector alike. I have ability to build consensus amongst the various stakeholders of diverse back ground for help in preparing universally acceptable policy making. India being a large and diverse country provides a rich experience in consensus building which is needed at the International level.

Reason for nomination

Mr Sanjeev Banzal has good international exposure to chair meetings. He has been the Chairman(Rapporteur) of Study Group-2(On Disaster Risk Reduction & management)of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) at Geneva for the period 2017-21. Besides,he has been Vice-Rapporteur for the study group on " Smart Cities and Societies" at ITU Geneva for the period 2017-21. He has wide ranging experience of speaking at international forums like International Telecommunication Union, Asia-Pacific Telecommunity(APT) and South-Asian Telecommunication Regulators Council(SATRC). Mr Banzal has been the Chairman of the working Group on "Spectrum" in the SATRC.

Mr Banzal has worked in the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of India(TRAI) for about 15 years wherein his focus area was formulating policies for ICT sector in India. This experience will certainly help in APNIC cooperation forum meetings for handling the policy issues related to the Internet Governance. Mr Banzal is also a Director in the Board of Directors in the Asia-Pacific Advanced Network(APAN).

Mr Banzal is MBA, ME(Electronics& Telecommunication) & B.E.(Electronics).

In APNIC where SIGs provide an open public forum to discuss topics of interest to APNIC and the Internet community in the Asia Pacific region, it is important that the SIG Group on Cooperation effectively provide a forum for discussion about broader Internet issues like Public Policy and Internet Governance, which are related to APNIC community interests, and which involve governments, other organizations, and other communities etc. As Chair of SIG on Cooperation Mr Banzal will help in develop and clarify the APNIC community’s position on issues of relevance to the public sector, or on matters for which a community position has been sought. The overall objectives and focus will be to advance APNIC’s vision for a global, open, stable, and secure Internet. This can be done by sharing, outreach, capacity building, and other activities. Mr Banzal has been involved in the APNIC Activities as well. He had attended APNIC-54 at Singapore last year wherein he contributed in the discussions during conference and building consensus on the key policy issues amongst the various participants.

India being one of the largest market for internet resources utilization, I am sure that Mr Banzal from India will certainly play a key role for the benefit of APNIC.
