Nominator statement

Since the early 1990's David Hughes has been involved with the Internet from both commercial and research perspectives. He spent many of the early years as Network Manager of Bond University before moving into the commercial sector. From the mid 90's he owned and operated a regional Internet provider and in 2000 sold it to a US based multi-national to form part of their pan-Asian Internet network. During his career he has consulted to national and international ISPs and Telcos. He currently runs the Network Team for the WebCentral business of MelbourneIT, Australia's largest web hosting company.

David has a long association with APNIC including assisting the relocation of APNIC from Tokyo to Brisbane. He has been a regular contributor to the APRICOT conferences and volunteered his time to help organise the event in its early years. He was recognised by APNIC for his efforts and presented with an award at the 10 year anniversary of APRICOT in Perth 2006.

David continues to research network management and develop tools to assist building and operating large IP networks. His recent research focus has been on tools for the allocation and management of network resources. He has contributed to numerous opensource projects but is best known for his development of the first open-source SQL based database system, mSQ Over the years his developments have been licensed by companies including Cisco, General Electric, Boeing, StorageTek and Real Networks.

David Hughes is passionate about the Internet and tries to help invigorate the industry where possible. In 2007 he was one of the founders of AusNOG and he continues as an organiser of the event. He has presented at dozens of Australian and International conferences, has authored numerous journal articles, and is co-author of one book.
