SIG: Address policy (New Technology)
Wednesday 28 February 2001, Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur
Minutes
Meeting commenced: 11:00 am
Chair: Geoff Huston
The Chair explained that the agenda for this session had been amended to include presentations that were not able to be given during the Routing SIG due to a lack of time.
Presentations
- Routing Information Service (RIS) - Mirjam Kuhne, RIPE NCC [Presentation (ppt)]
This presentation provided an overview of the RIS project at RIPE NCC.
Questions and discussion - No questions or discussion.
- Routing Registry Consistency Check (RRCC) - Andrei Robachevsky, RIPE NCC [Presentation (ppt)]
This presentation provided an overview of the RRCC project at RIPE NCC.
Questions and discussion
There was a general discussion about emerging problems with routing practices that are in operation in the Internet currently.
- MPLS-IX New IX Architecture - Ikuo Nakagawa, INTEC[Presentation (pdf)]
This presentation considered the use of MPLS as an IX architecture.
Questions and discussion There was a question about whether there has been any customer interest in this service so far. It was explained that there has been interest from those currently paying for expensive broadband access.
It was observed that it is difficult to control traffic using MPLS.
It was argued that the OSPF interior network that interconnects the boundary router cannot do open routing as a provider network. Otherwise it would have policies that would stop paths reaching each other. It was argued that company business plans do not put in place the barriers that would be needed to make this technique work. In other words, it was argued, putting routing policies in place within this network would reduce the utility of the network and would prevent peering with other networks. It was suggested that the complexity of routing policy behind this model would require a constrictive business model.
