Australian moneyAustralia uses dollars and cents in the form of banknotes ($100, $50, $20, $10, $5) and coins ($2, $1, 50¢, 20¢, 10¢, 5¢). Australian banknotes are made of plastic, rather than paper. BanksBank branch hours are generally 9.30am to 4pm Monday to Thursday and 9.30am to 5pm on Fridays. ATMs and EFTPOSATMs are widely available in Australia and most accept overseas credit cards and cards linked to the Cirrus or Plus systems. Check with your own bank for more details of availability. Electronic point of sale readers are now installed in many shops and service (gas) stations, many of which can give cash advances on credit cards. Travelers chequesAmerican Express and Thomas Cook travelers cheques are easily exchanged, as are many other international brands. As with cash exchanges, you may need to shop around for the best rates and commissions. You will normally need your passport to exchange travelers cheques. Credit cardsMajor credit cards are widely accepted (though some businesses may decline AMEX or Diners' Club - so check before you order your meal). Goods and Services TaxAustralia has recently introduced a Goods and Services Tax (GST). You may be able to get a GST refund for goods bought in Australia that you will take out with you.
